To the surprise of many that expect The Predator to try and eke out a second-week win, The House With A Clock In Its Walls took the top spot with a just under $27 million debut. The film plays into the Goosebumps area well with Jack Black identified there as well and with a “B+” CinemaScore it should do well enough to keep going a few weeks and build some coin as more family-friendly Halloween fare for the kids. With a $42 million budget the film should do well overall.

Second place saw A Simple Favor doing well in its second weekend with a great 35% drop that could have been much more. It’s getting interesting word of mouth since it isn’t quite what the trailers suggest it is and that’s generating some talk.

Also keeping with a light drop was The Nun at just 44%, which has it bringing in another $10 million to take the third place spot and cross the $100 million mark domestically. It’s at $192 million overseas so it’s doing great.

And as a continuing note, Crazy Rich Asians keeps with the crazy low percentage drops as this week was just 25%, which keeps it at fifth with $6 million and just a hair under $160 total.

This week did see the release of a new film from Amazon Studios that’s getting savaged in the reviews with Life Itself as it pulls just $2.1 million, which is now marked as the second worst opening weekend of all-time for something hitting 2,500 screens in its debut. Amazon only paid $10 million for it but that’s still going to be a loss overall with the distribution itself. And if that wasn’t bad enough and giving people something to really light into, Assassination Nation from Neon landed in 1,400 screens with just $1 million to its name.

Next week has several films coming into play that are worth checking out. Lionsgate goes for horror with Hell Fest in 2,200 screens while Universal is hitting up comedy with Night School in 2,800 screens. Pinnacle Peak is the latest to take on Little Women with 600 screens while Smallfoot gets the biggest picked from Warner Bros. with 4,000 screens.
