“Sneaking Bites”

What They Say:
A comedy manga, “Shonen Ashibe,” that follows the friendship between baby spotted seal Goma-chan and first-grade student Ashiya Ashibe. First serialized in 1988 and adapted to anime in 1991, the adorable Goma-chan created a massive following and a spotted seal boom. This spring, Goma-chan returns to “Tentere Anime.” A cute, pleasant story of Ashibe and Goma-chan and their unusual school and their neighbors. Sometimes endearing, sometimes bizarre, it’s a fun anime for the whole family!

Shonen Ashibe had a lot of fun playing with Tendou the last time around and that continues to be one of the strengths of the series. The ability to focus on the wide cast of characters and push our leads to the background – sometimes to the point where you barely remember that they were in it – is a big plus. It may make for some episodes that don’t land as well from time to time but you get a higher success rate with a greater cast to work with and the variety of interactions. So when we get an episode like this that shifts backward to give us a new episode focusing on Ashibe and Sugao, who are now living in the same time, it feels delightful because it hasn’t overplayed its hand. Just getting these two together is great, especially since Sugao is a Good Boy.

The initial focus of this is Ashibe discovering a delicious cake in the fridge and gets ready to dig in with Goma-chan, but Sugao won’t do it since it’s not the right thing to do. And doing it all wordlessly! That has Ashibe getting some accidental tastes for it, and prodding Sugao just enough to do the same, that both of them begin to really enjoy the cake that they’re not supposed to be eating. This just leads to more problems as it progresses, especially with Goma-chan causing trouble, and slowly but surely they end up with more and more bites – bites that can’t be hidden easily. Or, rather, can’t be hidden unless they eat more of it to even it up. And with those delicious strawberries there and the taste in their mouths, well, even Sugao can’t resist it at this point and the two are just all over it in making a bad situation even worse.

In Summary:
Watching as the pair make the situation worse and worse and try to come up with their own replacement cake is delightful. Goma-chan has some cute reaction moments throughout it but it’s just so infectiously fun to watch the two friends enjoying a situation and then making it horribly worse is utterly delightful. When things end up in such a terrible place and a cover is put into it all you just wait for it to turn disastrous and enjoy the results of it all. But, as is the case, Ma steals the show as she often does and that alone makes it a worthwhile moment since seeing her not letting them get away with things is the best.
