The Weekly TV Discussion Post For September 2nd, 2018

The summer period hasn’t had a whole lot going on in terms of what I’m recording on TiVo but there’s been some good streaming stuff to sink my teeth into. While I wait to get into tonight’s batch of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown – The Final Episodes, this week has been all about the streaming outside of a new Property Brothers episode.

While I haven’t finished it yet I got through more of Disenchantment and continue to enjoy the show a fair bit. It hasn’t totally clicked for me and it’s not a show that I can binge, doing one or two episodes at a time makes for some good fun. I’ve got two left on it to polish off this coming week and am looking forward to see them and for the second season that’s already in production.

Having finished up Marcella and Retribution the week before I was on the hunt for something new and Netflix new that as it delivered Deadwind to the top of my list. A twelve episode Finnish series, it’s a standard Scandinavian crime thriller drama that while it doesn’t do anything that really stands out or is unique it does deliver what I needed. Something to ease into and watch unfold with unusual twists and turns along the way. While the general thrust is kind of a given with who did what it does unpack a few other things along the way, making it an enjoyable experience.

This week was also a catch-up week where the two summer series I watch with my elderly mother came into play. We got to finish off Preacher with a double dose of episodes and just love the weirdness of it all. There’s so much going on and just a lot of really great time with Herr Starr that I keep falling in love with it. I can’t wait to see what’s next. We also did two more episodes of Castle Rock, though we’re behind what’s been streamed so far. It’s still very much a slow burn show, too much so in some ways, but it’s operating in a kind of standard Stephen King way. I like all the little moments and we get an episode devoted almost entirely to Sissy Spacek that shows her character’s story over several years that it’s just incredibly well done and reminds you what an absolute talent she is.

This coming week still doesn’t have a lot for me other than more Fear the Walking Dead and a little more Whose Line is it Anyway coming up. My first fall shows don’t hit for another three weeks!
