The Weekly Movies Discussion Post For August 5th, 2018

This week wasn’t too big of a movie week for me but a few things were snuck in here and there, mostly of a backlist kind of nature. On the new side of things, we did get a new trailer for Venom that showed Riot but I’m still feeling very wary about this film in general, especially without a subtitle track for this latest Tom Hardy voice.

I was pretty psyched to see we’re getting a mix of new with a Constantine animated film from Warner Bros. as Matt Ryan has done such a great job with the character. It’s using the CW Seed episodes but also an hour of new material to blend it all together, which means lots of one of my favorite brits.

I only caught one new film on Netflix this week with the Extinction piece that has Michael Pena and Lizzy Caplan in it plus some Mike Colter goodness. It’s something where I imagine it would have been under the radar in theaters and has just enough interesting bits to it so that it works but those kinds of problems are more highlighted on the small screen. It’s not a twisty film but the execution is solid and the set designs are fantastic, making for a solid enough experience.

I did pick up a few movies to expand on my collection and viewing in the weeks to come though through some sales. I’ve long wanted a copy of Get Smart as I think the film reboot was hilarious and I love Anne Hathaway, which is also why I picked up Bride Wars as part of a two-pack with 27 Dresses. I’m a big fan of romantic comedies so these are previously seen no-brainers for me. I also grabbed a comedy I wanted to see in theaters earlier this year with Blockers because I enjoy stupid teen comedies having grown up watching lots of them. I also fleshed out my Mission:Impossible collection as I only had the first three on Blu-ray and got the digital versions for a few bucks. To round it out with some class, iTunes had the restored version of Lawrence of Arabia for $5. I mean, how could I not grab it when all I have is the DVD from 15 years ago?

This week saw me without any anime for a bit so I was digging into some backlist live-action Japanese films, which means reviews of Kunochi and Arch Angels went live. oof.
