What They Say
The game is on! MBI has sealed off Shintou Teito and initiated Phase Two of the Sekirei Project!
As the Sekirei prepare to battle it out and leave just one standing, the pressure is on for those unwinged Sekirei to find their Ashikabi. But what if a Sekirei wants nothing to do with her Ashikabi? Such is the case for Tsukiumi, and she has come up with the perfect solution-why not just kill him??
Is there room in Minato’s harem for one more?
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Now Minato has three Sekirei. Should be a harem fans dream, but not so much for Minato. Not when one of them is a little girl, one of them is kind of an airhead obsessed with fighting, and all of them sleep in his bed every night. So not so much free time for Minato to take advantage of his third Sekirei, who happens to be a bit of a tease. And even if he could explore Matsu’s freaky side, the innkeeper of Izumo Inn acts like the mother to everyone under her roof and she would never let Minato have any “fun”.
Given that Musubi is a bit of an airhead, it shouldn’t be a surprise when Matsu learns she has made friends with Sekirei Number 4. This Sekirei is one of MBI’s enforcers, and at number 4, she’s one of the very strongest. Just that revelation alone is enough to scare Matsu near half to death when Musubi brings Number 4 home for a bath!
When the innkeeper finds Number 4, she kicks her out and tells her never to come back. Then the innkeeper drags Musubi out for a rough training session. Musubi has a long way to go if she wants to challenge Sekirei in the top 30. Good thing for Minato, his Ashikabi vibes seems to be attracting the Number 9 Sekirei. Bad thing is, that Sekirei has a bad attitude and hates the idea of Ashikabi. She even haunts Minato’s dreams, threatening to kill him just for being an Ashikabi!
Ashikabi and Sekirei drama aside, Minato isn’t the only one getting in on the action. Somehow his own sister becomes the Ashikabi for the only male Sekirei ever created! The whole chapter is hilarious and a fun change to the standard male Ashikabi and female Sekirei type relationship and sexual tension. Well, there is plenty of sexual tension, just reversed when Minato’s sister turns out to be pervier than he is!
Everyone’s life gets crazier when MBI forces the start of the Second Phase in the Sekirei Project. The Second Phase involves an escalation of fighting between Sekirei by locking down the entire city. No Sekirei or Ashikabi can leave the city. This not only forces the Sekirei into a smaller area, forcing altercations among them upon meeting but also creates factions. The city divides itself into four regions, each ruled by an Ashikabi and his Sekirei. This even forces Sekirei that had been friends to face-off in battles to the death!
In Summary:
This is a great volume in the Sekirei series. Minato captures another Sekirei, and a powerful one at that give she is ranked Number 9. Minato’s sister gets caught up in MBI’s machinations when she becomes the Ashikabi to the only male Sekirei in the Project. Then we get more back history and character development for numerous characters, including not only residents at the Izumo Inn but also the Izumo Innkeeper herself. The Innkeeper may be the strongest and most mysterious of all the Sekirei and she may be able to alter the course of the Sekirei Project, much to the annoyance of the MBI. My only complaint would be that with all the things going on around Minato, he continues to be largely obviously. It will be a disappointing series if Minato spends all his time standing on the sideline ducking his head whenever things get crazy. But time will tell, hopefully, he gets himself in the game soon.
