Midnight Pulp Streams The ‘Midnight Eye Goku’ OVA

2 min read

Discotek Media last year picked up the Midnight Eye Goku OVA from 1989 for release and is now looking to expand its availability in the streaming realm. The folks at Midnight Pulp have been bringing on a number of projects like this for their anime side in the last few months and it’s a good fit. The OVA is available in its original Japanese language with English subtitles only at the moment and can be found here.

The OVA was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri based on the script by Buichi Terasawa and Ryuzo Nakanishi. Hiroshi Hamasaki handled the character designs and it was animated at Toei. The project is based on the manga by Terasawa that ran for three volumes from 1987 to 1989 as serialized in Comic Burger magazine. The OVA was previously released in North America by Urban Vision.

The Japanese cast includes Juuji Matsuda as Goku Furinji, Mami Koyama as Yoko Yazaki, Norio Wakamoto as Genji Hakuryu, Daisuke Gouri as General Gomez, Ichirô Nagai as Dr. Yamazaki, Iemasa Kayumi as Voice, Kouichi Yamadera as Coroner, Kouji Totani as Uchimura, Megumi Terase as Peacock, Michihiro Ikemizu as Sakuma, Mikio Terashima as Chief, Youko Kawanami as Jane and Yūsaku Yara as Tamiya.

The English cast includes Steve Blum, Kirk Thornton, Michael Sorich, Rebecca Forstadt, Stephen Apostolina and Wendee Lee.

Plot concept: A private eye named Goku investigates a number of suicides of police officers. When he encounters the woman responsible for those suicides, he is caught by her supernatural powers and the only way to survive was to stab his own eye out. Now replaced with a cybernetic implant that allows him to access nearly every computer on earth and equipped with a powerful rod that can extend to quite a length, he resumes the investigation only to find out it falls deeper into the net of underground rulers.
