The Review

I was correct about the timeline being presented out of order in the previous episodes. Remedius was taken hostage in the past and what we’re seeing now is the present. He went from being a hostage to an organization member to leading the resistance. A ton of information is dropped about what exactly went down in the warehouse and the boys are warned off becoming involved any longer in the case. The dragon empire doesn’t like the fact their viscount went rogue and was attacking a rival government, they want him back probably dead or alive. Picking this information out of the wordy explanation was no easy task because of the sheer number of players involved in the plot. Watching episodes back to back would go a long way to making all of this easier to remember.

It was unexpected to rejoin the main players at a funeral. It’s refreshing to see Largonkin’s people mourning the death of one of their own after the attack by the monsters in the last episode. Gigina even dresses up in what I can only assume is traditional ceremonial attire for the occasion and manages to recite a nice song for the deceased. Then there’s Gayus who can’t be bothered to change out of the only outfit he apparently owns and talks some smack at Largonkin’s bequest to fire up the other guild members to get to slaughtering for revenge.

Largonkin is still trying to talk the boys into joining his organization, but Gayus feels an obligation to keep his office open. A bunch of names of who I can only assume are dead folks are dropped and it’s clear that Gayus can’t let go of his past. It’s keeping him from settling down and living his life because he believes any day could be his last. Why plan for the future when you won’t have one? Also, Gayus won’t explain to Jiv who Cuello was, and jealousy is rearing its head. (Meanwhile, Gigina is sleeping with like, four women at once proving that maybe he isn’t as into furniture as it would first appear.)

Plus, Gayus is still carrying around the cursed ring from the Cardinal. A ring which his arms/magic dealer can’t identify and is at least in part a scale from a 10,000-year-old dragon. (Cue the 10,000-year-old dragon jokes.) Oh, it also might be alive. Either way, Gayus still has the bad news mystery ring and won’t give it back for some reason.

Episode Grade: C +
