‘Deadpool 2’ Can’t Recreate The Box Office Magic

2 min read

The first Deadpool film did a massive $132 million in its opening weekend in North America back in February 2016 but that same kind of energy didn’t feel like it took hold in the lead-up to this one. The debut of Deadpool 2 still was a strong opener, however, as it did $125 million domestically with another $176 million overseas for a $301 million take total – the largest for Fox International distribution. The film got an “A” CinemaScore domestically and skewed a bit older in demographics than the previous one did. It had a great start to the weekend with Thursday previews and Friday’s take coming up with a $53 million opening day but it wasn’t able to bring that through the entire weekend, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see it adjust up a bit when all is said and done and final full numbers come in.

This release is seeing more competition than the first film did as Avengers: Infinity War had another good weekend with over $28 million to bring it to $595 million domestic while its worldwide is at $1.81 billion so far, which makes it the fourth largest global release. The debut of Book Club landed in third with  $12.5 million take, which is on expectations and should hit $40 million going by the usual formula.

Next week, Deadpool 2 gets more competition right away with the debut of Solo: A Star Wars Story hitting 4,200 screens. There’s a lot of independent films going into a handful of theaters as well but nothing else wide.
