‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Box Office Gobbles Up China

2 min read

Anybody that was predicting that Infinity War wouldn’t do well, and there were a few out there talking fatigue, simply didn’t connect the dots right. In its third domestic weekend of release, the film added another $61 million to its total that brings us to $548 million with the weekday numbers doing more daily than a lot of films were doing with their premiere weekends. It’s not the eighth largest domestic release of all time and is expanding well overseas. The film landed in China this weekend where it did a whopping $200 million, the second largest debut in the market – and has done more in that weekend than the original Avengers did in China in full and, more recently, Captain America: Civil War.

The film is now at $1.6 billion worldwide and is in fifth place behind Jurassic World.

New releases this weekend didn’t do huge numbers but added a little color to it. Life of the Party is the first Melissa McCarthy film to open under $20 million in quite some time and it’s getting mediocre scores, so expectations of a short life are out there for it. It was made for just $30 million so it’s just going to be a smaller party overall.

Universal grabbed a spot with Breaking In landing in third place with a $16.5 million take but that’s also kind f just going with a middle of the road reception, though it exceeded the studio expectations and was just for just $6 million.

Next weekend will see Infinity War getting bumped to second place as Book Club arrives! No, I’m kidding – though I’ll likely see that pretty early on as I grew up watching most of the actors in it. What’ll dominate the weekend is Deadpool 2 with it opening in 4,200 screens. Global Road is also bringing out a film with Show Dogs landing in 3,000 screens.
