Amanchu! ~Advance~ Episode #06

Halloween hijinks.

Episode #6: “The Story of Halloween Night’s Dream”

It’s Halloween! Well, it is in Amanchu which is stuck in fall mode at the moment. While it’s not uncommon to find occasional references to Halloween in anime, the Holiday wasn’t really celebrated there. Japan already had a festival dedicated to the dead, Obon. However, Halloween is slowly growing in popularity in Japan, thanks to the US’s obsession with the Holiday. So, Ito Marine Town is a real-life tourist spot with a spa and marina and harbor tours, and lots of shopping. Basically a tourist trap, so I’m not really surprised at the Halloween festivities in the very not-Japanese looking architecturally mall.

Pikari and Teko are all dressed up and ready to partake in Halloween mischief. Pikari appears to be a flamboyant vampire and Teko a princess. They are quickly joined by Kokoro, who was ambushed and dressed up in a cute kitty dress by an older sister. (AHA! Mystery dream girl was related!) The adorable costumes get them a fair bit of attention that the two shy girls really don’t know how to handle.

The rest of the diving club is present at the event as well. The twins are dressed up as octopus working the festival. Nobody seems to have any interest in the scavenger hunt race until a flippant promise to a little girl from Pikari about winning a kiss from the prince (her) and suddenly a crowd forms. So begins the jealousy-fueled competition between Teko and Kokoro to win the kiss. (Their teacher looks on with bemusement from the table where she’s eating peanuts and drinking beer.)

The race isn’t as easy as it looks. Everyone had to grab a card and find an item, and they couldn’t explain what that item was for. Everyone in the race seems to be having difficulty securing their item. Much hilarity ensues as everyone attempts to secure what they need to win.

Mato-sensei gets a little buzzed and wistful watching her students. She’s joined by her coworker and the series seems to be hinting quite heavily that he’s interested in her. The nostalgic Mato-sensei is starting to become a running theme and I’m starting to feel a bit bad for her. It’s nice to see that she’s getting her own character development though, I like that.

The contest ends the only way it can in this series, and the girls celebrate a successful festival at the spa.

In Summary:
It might be a Halloween focused episode, but the spookiest thing for Teko might just be having to interact with strangers! If she wants to win Pikari’s heart she has to give it her all, although she has some stiff competition from Kokoro. This episode is a bit of a silly-cute overload that certainly gets more than a little sappy in the end, but it appears the spooky antics aren’t quite ending this week judging by the preview.
