What They Say:
The childhood friends Akkun and Nontan are boyfriend and girlfriend. But Akkun is always saying ridiculously harsh things to Nontan as well as being cold with her and is frequently moody. But that’s just how Akkun expresses his love for Nontan. This is a high school love comedy about Akkun and Nontan, who doesn’t seem to care at all about how Akkun acts toward her.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With plenty of weird emotional abuse heaped upon the cast in the first two episodes, this one shifts gears just a little bit. This one takes us back to when they were second year middle school students and dating with Akkun coming up with all kinds of things that he wants to do with her – including coming up with the nickname Nontan. It’s amusing seeing him practicing it so much but unable to follow through because of his nervousness. Some of the time we see with the two together has them almost like a normal couple but Akkun’s nature comes through before long. Where it takes an amusingly weird twist is in that he gets a picture of Nontan from Nontan’s mother and figures he’ll tape it to the wall in his bedroom. Shifting to the present we get it made clear that he’s filling that will himself with a whole lot of pictures based on what we’ve seen before in a very stalkery kind of way.

In Summary:
Unhealthy anime is unhealthy. And boy is this unhealthy. While I get the humor from it in an abstract way and there are series where a lot of this can be done under different relationship dynamics and it would work, what we get here is just pretty cringy and obsessive on Akkun’s part. Nontan’s got her issues as well so this is one of those broken couples that work together because of how they’re broken. And yes, it’s a comedy, but it can be damn hard to find the humor in much of this.
