Toei Animation brought out seven box sets for the complete Galaxy Express 999 series back in 2014 as part of the 60th-anniversary of Leiji Matsumoto’s career. The show was done up over several months for seven box sets that were 29,400yen each. Those have gone out of print in the years since and now they got a recent relisting that I had missed where they’re all now available again, same price and all at once, as of March 23rd, 2018. The sets are designed with the remastered video that’s been done to remove the noise and enhance the colors and the audio has been completely remastered as well. Each set comes in a gatefold designed box with a 48-page booklet about that chunk of episodes.

The set layout is setup like this:

  • BD-Box 1 (eps 01 – 16)
  • BD-Box 2 (eps 17 – 33)
  • BD-Box 3 (eps 34 – 50)
  • BD-Box 4 (eps 51 – 67)
  • BD-Box 5 (eps 68 – 82)
  • BD-Box 6 (eps 83 – 99)
  • BD-Box 7 (eps 100 – 113)

Plot concept: In a distant future, Tetsuro is a human boy who wants his body replaced with a robotic one. This is possible, but to do so he has to reach the Immortal Planet onboard the space train Galaxy Express 999. Maetel, a beautiful and mysterious blonde woman dressed in Russian style, joins him in the long journey through space. Every episode sees our heroes arriving in a new planet’s space train station.
