The Gintama property has been working toward a conclusion for awhile now and new details surfaced with the latest issue of Weekly Shonen Jump today. The current anime series is ending this month with episode 353, which was largely expected, but it’s set to return in July as it moves forward with the Silver Soul arc to bring the project to a climax. It’s expected that Crunchyroll will be streaming the return as they’ve handled pretty much all other subtitled streaming aspects of the show for awhile now.
The series comes from the manga by Hideaki Sorachi and began its animated life back in 2006, first with a 201 episode series and then with a new 64 episode series a couple of years ago. Add in numerous specials and a pair of theatrical movies and there is a lot of material for the property and plenty more to adapt as the manga has been ongoing since 2003. There are currently over seventy published volumes in Japan as well as five light novels.
Plot concept: The values of the city of Edo suddenly changed when the aliens, called Amanto, invaded. In a world where anything goes, from aliens to motorbikes and even electric trains, a man known as the last samurai clings to his unchanging spirit. His name is Gintoki Sakata, a.k.a. Odd Jobs Gin. He’s reckless and irresponsible, but somehow he does what needs to be done in his own subtle way. The lifestyles of Gin and his companions will make you laugh, make you cry, and warm your heart!
