What They Say:
Leading a fight for freedom in the far future, Steve Rogers and his troops are outgunned and outnumbered! For the people of the Divided States of America, that’s always been a death sentence…but with Captain America, it’s a chance to fight back!

Content: (warning, section may contain spoilers)
Captain America, Liang and the rebels of 2025 have banded together to overthrow Rampart and King Babbington (who took over while the patriotic hero was on ice).  They’ve got quite a fight ahead of them, and Captain America finds himself against a powerful foe immediately.  This massive armored foe seems to be far more powerful than the good captain, but there’s a good reason- Cap knocks the knight’s helmet off to discover his foe is none other than The Incredible Hulk!  Hulk leaps into battle against Captain America without a second thought, and Steve realizes that Rampart may have done something to his old friend.  The rebel charge manages to free the green behemoth and Cap moves with Liang to their next target while the commandos protect a freed Banner.

Here, we discover that The Thing has also survived, and is more than happy to help Cap out after being brought up to speed on what’s gone down.  After some preparation, Cap leads a charge on Babbington’s castle and try as the dictator might, Cap wins the day.  The voice of this issue isn’t really on one character, nor is one character the focus, instead, Scenes like Babbington’s attempt to control Captain America and using the Hulk and the Thing to his own greedy ends show us that the story is more about how powerful freedom and justice are as concepts and that those who take power unearned can never stay in control.  Cap’s ideals ring through the issue, and so even if the focus is on all the characters, Captain America really is truly a voice above all.  It’s about a fight for freedom, and that’s what this character has always been about.  It definitely works here, and shows us with certainty that Cap is back to his roots.

In Summary:
This was a great issue.  The action was great (as was getting to see The Hulk in action again after the last two events), The art was modern but reminiscent of old stories, And the story and ideals presented through the story are absolutely undeniably Captain America!  This is the Cap we all wondered about when Hydra Cap was running roughshod in Secret Empire, and oh boy is Cap back.  Steve Rogers’ unswerving loyalty to his people and his country has always been a defining character trait, and that is shown in every page of this issue.  From the dialogue, to character interactions, to even fight scenes, everything just screams “Captain America”.  It makes the line, “I fight for freedom and hope.  Those are the fires that burn forever,” so much better, because it epitomizes who the hero is as a character.  As Cap takes the country back from those who harmed it, we’ve been given a great character study on him this issue, and I highly recommend it.  If you’re a fan of Captain America or the old school comics, you need to pick this up!
