Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The book has definitely taken on a different energy since Amazo was unleashed and that’s been good forit. I really enjoyed the character material we hard as it’s an area that Tom Taylor works really well and mixing that in throughout the series has been a strength. But the shift to a really big fight with stakes is hugely important and a big part of the draw of the series. This installment is again illustrated by Redondo and Albarran with Lokus turning in more great color work across the board and that means that the fights look great here, the characters are filled with great emotional expressions, and the settings with how everything is placed is just fantastic, particularly anything involving what’s happening on the moon.

The Earth based material deals with a little uncertainty as to what just happened as even Blue Beetle can’t figure it out with how Amazo was moved offworld. What’s helping in this fight, or trying to, is what Damian and the others are doing in Gorilla City to try and slow down Amazo to give Kara a chance since the number of deaths is just staggering to all of them – even Jason. They’ve worked Ivo in the right way to get involved and he’s doing his best, which means there’s some good tension here as they try to figure out an opening – at least until Anasthia shows up and is in full on service mode toward Ra’s as she’s quite simply disappointed with everyone here. It’s a great little sequence because of how tight the camera angle is for much of this and the brutality of what happens to Ivo along the way.

It’s a great contrast to what’s happening on the moon as Kara fights Amazo and Jamie shows up to try and understand what just happened. It plays in parallel to what Ivo is doing as she struggles against the creature until a method is figured out to try and really push Amazo to its limits. Though you don’t expect Kara to die here, the possibility is there and that makes it an engaging read from that alone. But watching as the tables turn, Jamie’s involvement surfaces, and the visual beauty of it all with what the team puts together in pencils, inks, and colors, it’s just striking. The main big panel wide view of Kara in front of the Earth is great and really speaks to a sense of power and majesty that’s not used often enough with characters like this.

In Summary:
This is a great issue with what it does for the action side of things as it plays big with great results. Kara doesn’t have an easy go of it, which is expected but well-handled, and we see a good support team trying to help her so that she’s not alone in this fight. The visuals are great, the tense material with those that are pushing back against Ra’s is spot on, and the bit of simple humanity from Jamie that he brings to the page hits a sweet and necessary spot. Definitely an issue that hopefully signals that we’re going into a big end run piece here in the fight against Ra’s and his plan to save the world.
