This year has been decent for the of the Haikyu!! franchise as they got two compilation films with Haikyu!! Talentand Sense and Haikyu!! Battle of Concepts, which landed in theaters in Japan on September 15th, 2017 and September 29th, 2017 respectively.
Now the shift is toward the home video release side for it. Both films are scheduled to come out on January 17th, 2018 where they’re all listed as limited editions where the DVDs are priced at 4,200 yen and the Blu-ray’s at 5,200 yen. Extras include the teasers, announcement videos, and the special news segments on them.
The Shonen Jump series has been running since 2012 and we’ve had three TV seasons for it so far. Crunchyroll simulcast the series previously and Sentai Filmworks picked up the home video and additional streaming rights to it.
The series comes from manga creator Haruichi Furudate and is directed by Susumu Mitsunaka (Cuticle Detective Inaba, Bunny Drop) with series composition by Taku Kishimoto (Silver Spoon, Tales from Earthsea), character designs by Takahiro Kishida (BTOOOM!, Puella Magi Madoka Magica) and animation production by Production I.G (Ghost Hound, Kuroko’s Basketball).
Plot concept: Inspired after watching a volleyball ace nicknamed “Little Giant” in action, small-statured Shouyou Hinata revives the volleyball club at his middle school. The newly-formed team even makes it to a tournament; however, their first match turns out to be their last when they are brutally squashed by the “King of the Court,” Tobio Kageyama. Hinata vows to surpass Kageyama, and so after graduating from middle school, he joins Karasuno High School’s volleyball team—only to find that his sworn rival, Kageyama, is now his teammate.
Thanks to his short height, Hinata struggles to find his role on the team, even with his superior jumping power. Surprisingly, Kageyama has his own problems that only Hinata can help with, and learning to work together appears to be the only way for the team to be successful. Based on Haruichi Furudate’s popular shounen manga of the same name, Haikyuu!! is an exhilarating and emotional sports comedy following two determined athletes as they attempt to patch a heated rivalry in order to make their high school volleyball team the best in Japan.
