“Path of the Root”

What They Say:
It’s the closing years of the Taisho era, a turbulent time when the military empire of Japan is rising to go to war with the world. The protagonist, Hiiragi Kyoichiro, has come to the Imperial Capital, Tokyo, to attend Imperial University. He is determined to pursue a scholar’s path and become a great man back in his hometown. But now the Japanese army has set its sights on Kyoichiro, because of a special ability that he possesses. As a result of a terrible illness from his youth, Kyoichiro gained the ability to see the spirits of the dead.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With a bit of fun action the last time around and all of it done in normal form, Taisho Mebiusline was fun enough but it feels like it lacks a certain consistency at the moment to be really defined. This episode has Kyo learning what the Five Katana are as they head back to a sacred place to recover after the recent events and we meet Omi. This brings in how the group has operated to help the government over time because of the powers they have but they’ve been shut out by the military now, leading to them being labeled as enemies of the state while still trying to do the right thing. They’re trying to keep Kyo out of it and telling him all of this should warn him away but you know he’s just going to get more involved even after being sent away.

In Summary:
The series expands on its concept here a bit and does it decently enough but something about the show is just tickling the back of my brain and keeping me from enjoying it more. I like the cuter aspects of it and I like some of what it’s doing as a concept but it’s not putting it together in an engaging enough way that feels coherent enough to click. It’s an easy watch with some cute moments and lots of pretty guys so it’s worth it from that perspective at least.
