With Funimation rolling out newly dubbed episodes of Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199, we now have Crunchyroll beginning to stream the show in its original Japanese language. This one is a bit unusual though because the subtitled version is locked to US viewing only whereas the dub has a bit more regional availability on Funimation’s site. Which is likely owed to the original licensor in where they can show it in that dubbed versions have more rights available while the original Japanese language one is divided up more. Crunchyroll has not formally announced its regional availability and it could grow over time.
The series was directed by Akihiro Enomoto with Yutaka Izubuchi, who also worked the series composition. Nobuteru Yuki handled the character designs with AIC And Xebec working on the animation production. The Japanese cast includes Daisuke Ono as Susumu Kodai, Houko Kuwashima as Yuki Mori, Kenichi Suzumura as Daisuke Shima, Takayuki Sugo as Captain Jūzō Okita, Akio Ohtsuka as General Elk Domel, Aya Hisakawa as Lt. Kaoru Niimi, and Aya Uchida as Warant Officer Yuria Misaki.
Plot Concept: Plot Summary: The year is 2199. The human race has been crushed in their war with the Gamilos, driven into underground cities by the invader’s assault. Scientists estimate they have only a year left. The young officers Susumu Kodai and Daisuke Shima receive a mysterious capsule from a ship that made an emergency landing on Mars and return with it to Earth. It contains humanity’s last hope: the planet Iscandar on the other side of the Magellan Galaxy has the technology to defeat the Gamilos and restore the planet. The space battleship Yamato is entrusted with this task, but they have only one year before humanity ends.
