This really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone but the folks at Lucasfilm are looking at what they’re going to work on next after the current trilogy finishes up in 2019 and after getting things out the door with both the Solo movie next year and the announced Obi-Wan movie. Anyone that thought that they, and Disney, would just leave it at that going into the 2020’s obviously isn’t thinking straight.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is definitely going to be doing a lot of press in the coming months and she had a sit down on the Star Wars show that’s produced in-house where it looks like we might be getting more stories with the new cast once this current trilogy is done, though some are saying “new trilogy” already which may not be the best way to look at it just yet.
“We’re sitting down now, we’re talking about the next ten years of Star Wars stories, and we’re looking at narratively where that might go,” Kennedy said. “Future stories beyond Episode IX with these new characters: Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8. But we’re also looking at working with people that are interested in coming into the Star Wars world and taking us to places that we haven’t been yet. And that’s exciting too because its a vast galaxy far, far away, so the possibilities are endless.”
I’ll be pulling for a porg interpretation of all the films in the meantime, ala Threepio in Return of the Jedi style with the Ewoks.
With Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the cast includes Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award® winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award® nominee Laura Dern, and talented newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.
The film was directed by Rian Johnson, who also worked on the screenplay for it. It’s scheduled for a December 15th, 2017 release.
