Onyankopon Episode 3“I Don’t Want to Study, Meow”

What They Say:
“I dance, therefore I am” West African sky-god Onyankopon saves high school girls with song and dance! Long ago, West African sky-god Onyankopon watched over humanity in their midst. But one day, as an elderly woman had been beating yam potatoes in a mortar, she accidentally hits whacks Onyankopon with the mallet, leaving her traumatized from the pain. Though she is now more wary of people, with the help of her underling spirits, whom she calls “Angels,” she continues to help humanity solve its problems.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With the series structure pretty much set at this point we see how Onyankopon are watching over the humans and we get some amusing dialogue while the kids are studying. The study session itself is fun in seeing the initial panic one of them has with an upcoming test and just how they don’t think a lot of it will be useful. The way they come up with some amusing allusions to work with about how they’re all on the same page is cutely comical and hits a certain note that I imagine clicks for viewers, especially since it devolves into the song and dance routine that I can envision being hummed at school the next day.

In Summary:
Onyankopon has another cute episode here but as the structure of it all gets more formalized it loses a bit of its appeal. I like the weirdness we get with Onyankopon at the start and hope they explore that a bit more but the episodes in general are basically becoming mad libs of sorts where you can just swap things out and it’ll work just fine. I like the look of it and some of the beats that it hits though and it gets a grin or two at the least each episode.
