What They Say
The Hawaii trip continues! Haruhiko puts his first enchanted weapon to use, endangering his own life to protect his classmate Mana Kimura from the demon Navy. Will he be able to fend off the horny demon? And if he stumbles upon an opportunity to look into Yukanaria’s past, will he take the chance to see what her relationship with Fulcanelli was really like?

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
First of all, I have to say Kawachi’s drawings of the women in this series is crazy ecchi, especially considering she’s a female mangaka. In fact, the first page of the book is a full-page drawing of Eukanaria in a bikini sitting in a very ero-manga style pose.

Is there in a chink in Eukanaria’s armor of emotional disinterest for Haruhiko? During Haruhiko’s battle against the crow demon, all he can do is protect Mana, leaving Eukanaria to fend for herself. When the battle finally ends, Eukanaria flies into a jealous fit of rage because Haruhiko didn’t try to protect her. Eukanaria’s reaction seems a little strange considering she acts like Haruhiko as a mere vessel for Fulcanelli’s soul. Of course, true to form Eukanaria quickly reverts to her old self by trying to get Haruhiko to sleep with anyone so she can cast out his soul. Nevertheless, when she tries to set up Haruhiko and Yuka on a date, is she up to her old tricks or feeling bad for the way she has treated Haruhiko?

This volume isn’t quite as funny as earlier books, however, we finally get to see some of Eukanaria’s past. Haruhiko learns he can scan people’s memories and he tries it while Eukanaria is sleeping. The memory he finds is one where Fulcanelli is angry with Eukanaria for giving too many of her powers to him. But he’s a nice guy, so he just invents something to give her back the power she lost. So it’s no real wonder why she liked the guy so much, he’s pretty dang nice. Oh yeah, we also learn that Eukanaria has ALWAYS dressed like a sex goddess.

Unfortunately, this small glimpse into Eukanaria’s past doesn’t tell us any more about what she was like before she met Fulcanelli (although she hates who she was back then). Neither do we learn anything new about what happened/killed Fulcanelli. So the mystery continues on that front, but the crow demon does provide some new information about demons and enchanters. Normally demons form a contract with a human of the opposite sex, turning them into an enchanter by transferring over some demon powers. The demon becomes weaker but now has an enchanter to work for them. Doing the deed, which also strengthens the bond as they become lovers, usually seals the pact. This essentially turns a normal enchanter into a slave to the demon, unless the enchanter is better in bed, which turns the tables.

So if Fulcanelli was a porn star then that would explain why he seemed to have Eukanaria wrapped around his little finger. It would also explain why she’s going to so much trouble to resurrect him instead of just finding a new guy to make a pact with. And we can’t forget about Mana and her choice between becoming the crow demon’s enchanter or just keeping the guy as a pet. Will she go through with it, and if she does then does that mean she and the crow demon have to get down and dirty? But she loves Haruhiko, so how does she think that’s going to make him feel? Or does she hope to get closer to Haruhiko by also becoming an enchanter? So many questions, so many mysteries, but this series is funny and it has an excellent pace so I don’t mind waiting to learn more about damn near everyone’s past.
