Warner Bros. is continuing to develop an array of films based on the DC Comics characters in their library and it’s becoming clearer that the “shared universe” thing is going to be a bit more limited as time goes forward. Which, frustrating as it may be in some senses, may be for the best after such a problematic launch through Man of Steel and the Batman v Superman film. With the potential for Flash to kind of Flashpoint the whole thing they may restart it later on.
In the meantime, however, the studio looks to be going forward with a range of projects. After revealing a Joker origin film that would not be connected to the shared universe, and the previously revealed Gotham City Sirens film, they’re now developing a Harley Quinn and Joker spinoff film from Suicide Squad. John Requa and Glenn Ficarra are in discussions to write and direct it along with producing it with Margot Robbie and Jared Leto reprising their roles. There are no details about what it will be but it could either pick up from where Suicide Squad left off in a new way or deal with their time before the film and Harley’s capture. A Suicide Squad feature is is also in the works.
Requar and Ficarra worked on Bad Santa previously as writers but they haven’t had big successes beyond that in film while their work on This Is Us on TV is doing quite well. What they do have are some movies that click with certain audiences, notably their work in directing Focus, a film that just worked beautifully for me in far too many ways and gives me hope for what this kind of feature could be.
