Lucasfilm Developing ‘Obi-wan Kenobi’ Feature

2 min read

Star_Wars_7_CoverOne project that has been hoped for more than most others I think when it comes to exploring the gaps in the current continuity is that of the character of Obi-wan Kenobi. Played originally by Alec Guinness in order to fund his other projects back in the day, the prequels brought in Ewan McGregor for it as his uncle was in the original film as an X-Wing pilot. McGregor was one of the highlights of the prequels as he channeled Guinness wonderfully while bringing the right kind of youthfulness to it.

Now, the Hollywood Reporter is indicating that a feature film on the character is in the early stages of being developed. It’s unclear as to what period it would take place in and whether McGregor would be involved, though he’s indicated repeatedly he’ll be eagerly up to tackling the role if they want him to, but it’s hard to imagine that they’d try to go toward when the character was older or younger. There’s actually a good deal to explore in the post-Revenge of the Sith period as we’ve seen through both the comics and Star Wars Rebels where he’s made appearances in the new canon continuity.

Right now, director Stephen Daldry is in talks for the film where he’d direct and work on the script that currently hasn’t been started on yet. Daldry’s definitely an interesting choice and you know Lucasfilm is going to be even more careful at this stage after the first two spin-off’s suffered various problems. He’s well known for his work on Billy Elliot and The Hours while most recently he directed several episodes of The Crown for Netflix.
