‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Conquers Box Office

2 min read

War for the Planet of the ApesThe battle for the box office was definitely on this weekend as Spider-Man: Homecoming has been doing very well but was facing off against War for the Planet of the Apes. While down from the 2014 opening of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which did $72 million, the $56 million opening for War earned it the top spot as Spider-Man: Homecoming came in at $45 million in its second weekend. With the weekday totals doing well (and eating into the weekends to some degree), the film is sitting pretty at $208 million domestically and has another $261 million overseas so far and still has some big areas to open in, notably China.

With War, the film has a very good CinemaScore and is likely to do well overall but will do it over time and it’s working from a slightly lower budget as well as it was $20 million cheaper to make than Dawn was. With good reviews and word of mouth along with a potentially good overseas take it should hold its own and hit well on home video as it can be sold as part of a trilogy.

The Big Sick expanded this weekend to just under 2,600 screens and hit almost 48 million to bring it to just over $16 million so far. It’ll do well overall but it may not go much wider. The debut of Wish Upon didn’t get its wish granted as it arrives at seventh place with a $5.5 million total and some really bad reviews – and a C- CinemaScore.

And for those keeping tracking, Wonder Woman added another $7 million to its coffers to bring it to $380.6 million so far, which means it’ll surpass Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 later this week. It’s also done $384 million overseas for a worldwide just under $765 million and it still has to open in Japan.

Next week has three vilms opening wide with Valerian in 3,400 screens, Dunkirk in 3,600 screens, and Girls Trip in 2,500 screens.
