Ninja Girl and Samurai Master Episode 30“The Rokujo Battle While the Demon Is Away”

What They Say:
The year is 1555, the middle of the Warring States period, and one young man holds on to a very big dream. That young man, known as an empty-headed fool, is none other than Oda Nobunaga. Enchanted by his dream, a certain young girl who admires Nobunaga swears that she will become his ninja one day. Nobunaga has one goal: to unify Japan by military might! Decorated by a colorful cast of characters, including the airheaded Kichou, the errand boy Hideyoshi, the tsundere Nene, the straight man Mitsuhide, and the half-dead Hanbei, this heavy-hitting wartime gag anime is about to begin!!

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
We’ve had some fun with Chidori in action lately and playful banter with a new player in the game for her and Nobunaga to deal with. With this episode, we get the New Year’s celebration which means Nobunaga is drinking a whole lot, though not what people think. A decent part of the episode is just showing off the various characters and how they spend their time here and some of what they miss. The back half of it is focused on an incident in Kyo, however, were a push is made by others to defeat Yoshiaki while Nobunaga is away. This sets a few things into motion to be dealt with, including a revenge subplot against Nobunaga by a former foe who has reinvented himself in a big way.

In Summary:
With a lot going on here the episode is a pretty quick and busy piece that has some cute bits but ends up feeling overstuffed instead of smooth and amusing. It has its serious moments to get things in motion with the main plot and what everyone has to rally to do but it zigs and zags a lot which leaves you feeling less invested in the moments. The lighter first part works pretty well but it becomes more of a mess as it gets into the action in the back half.
