‘Logan’ Slices Up Box Office Victory

2 min read

LoganIt was a very good weekend for Fox with the debut of Logan, the final entry in the franchise for Hugh Jackman in the role that has helped him really make a name for himself over the years. The film did some big numbers this weekend with a $85 million take, $20.6 million of which (worldwide)came from IMAX where it’s the second best R-rated showing for the format after Deadpool at $24.4 million. The film took the critical acclaim and really worked the marketing well the last few months and combined with it also being Patrick Stewart’s swan song with the Xavier character, it was a really great way to bring this arc to a close. Add in that it did $152 million overseas this weekend as well and you know Fox is really taking a look at what films from this slice of rights they have that will work as an R-Rated film after it and DeadpoolX-Force time, folks…

Other new films this weekend didn’t fare quite as well, notably with Before I Fall, as it did just $5 million over the three days. The Shack fared better at $16 million but has an unknown budget to it. Last week’s films are holding about as expected with Get Out having just a 22% drop with $26 million to land it in second place with a $76 million domestic take so far.

John Wick 2 is doing well overall as it’s at $144 million worldwide. La La Land is also riding high as it did another $3 million domestic and $11 million international, bringing it to $395 million worldwide.

And to frustrate certain critics, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is doing great in China as it added another $18 million to bring it to $141 million in ten days in the country, for a $267 million international take.

With a lot of theaters still showing some Oscar nominees and winners, some of which are hitting home video already, a lot of that will disappear this coming weekend. Only one new film is going wide this coming weekend but it’s a biggie with Kong: Skull Island debuting.
