Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Akito’s cruelty comes to the forefront of the story in this volume. It’s been known for a while, but not much displayed in the present. In the reveal of the volume, he holds the power over all the other members of the zodiac as the god that invited them to the banquet.

The volume true reveal, though, is that every member of this curse is broken, the god included. Akito has been born and blinded by the immense power the god holds over the rest of the zodiac. No other life is known to Akito, and thus it cannot even be fathomed that power cannot be wielded. Akito is the god in the Sohma’s world and will not be questioned. But Tohru has thrown a wrench into that.

Tohru and Rin, in addition to Kureno, have challenged the status quo more than Akito ever anticipated. Tohru has allowed Kyo into her life more than anyone else, besides his master, has. She accepts him, unequivocally. She fears him more than she can bear, but she loves him—more than she even realizes. The cat, who was never allowed a spot at the table because of the story of the Chinese Zodiac, is finally accepted in full.

Kagura directly contrasts to Tohru. She also saw Kyo’s true form, but when they were children. But Kagura never accepted Kyo’s true form. She fled from it, scared to death. She only knew she was cursed with the same curse Kyo was. She didn’t know the gravity of it all. They were just kids, after all. But Kagura could never accept, or at least face, all of Kyo like Tohru had. Kyo could never love Kagura because he saw her as his first friend and sister figure.

Rin’s story is different though. The horse of the zodiac, Rin and Hatsuharu are in a relationship, but she wants to rid Hatsuharu of the curse of the zodiac. No one should have to bear its burden, and she’s doing what she thinks best for him. And what’s best for him is certainly not whatever Tohru Honda is doing.

In Summary:
Everyone wants free of this curse. It’s a burden to all of them, though I’m sure every generation has attempted various ways of relieving themselves of it all and failed. The tale is told through the eyes of the current zodiac, who have Tohru with them. Tohru, who warms hearts. Tohru, who accepts everyone. Tohru who gave the cat love when no one else would, or has, for probably generations. Some things can change.
