seven-deadly-sins-header-12-15Funimation has made a pretty welcome announcement today with the acquisition of The Seven Deadly Sins with its first anime season. The distributor is looking at bringing it out for North American release by the end of this year on home video. This is a home video only release as Netflix retains the worldwide streaming rights for it and previously produced an English language dub among others.

The first season of the series was directed by Tensai Okamura for A-1 Pictures with Shotaro Suga handling the composition while Keigo Sasaki handled the character designs for it as well as serving as chief animation director.

The Japanese cast includes Yuuki Kaji as Meliodas, Sora Amamiya as Elizabeth, Jun Fukuyama as King, Misaki Kuno as Hawk and Mamoru Miyano as Gilthunder so far.

The manga is created by Nakaba Suzuki with sixteen volumes in print so far and over three million copies in circulation total. Working in a similar vein as a few other properties of this nature, the manga has done the crossover gig with Fairy Tail before and you can imagine seeing that pop up in anime form as well as a special to promote it. The manga series began in 2012 and Kodansha Comics is bringing the series out this year for North American fans in print while Crunchyroll has the digital chapters being published on their site.

Plot concept: In a troubled kingdom plagued with corrupted knights, the only salvation will come from sin. From the studio behind Fairy Tail comes a brand-new action-adventure that proves there’s more than one side to a story.

When Holy Knights arrest her father and sisters, Princess Elizabeth seeks out a group of legendary warriors known as the Seven Deadly Sins. Once revered, the Sins betrayed the kingdom and became fearsome fugitives that no man is willing to face—a far cry from the heroes this princess needs.

Finding the Sins is no easy task, and Elizabeth’s journey takes her to a small tavern where she collapses in front of a short, unassuming man and his talking pig. Helpful, albeit perverted, the barkeep reveals that he’s actually Meliodas, the Dragon Sin of Wrath—captain of the Seven Deadly Sins! Agreeing to help her, the two travel the countryside in search of his companions. But their journey pits them against dangerous creatures and the treacherous, power-hungry Holy Knights who plan on eliminating the Sins for good.
