The upcoming new anime adaptation of the Mahoujin Guru Guru manga series is moving right along but we’re not expecting to hear too much more until AnimeJapan 2017. We recently learned that Shizuka Ishigami will play Nike while Yoshimi Ohara will play Kukuri and now the first updated character visual has been released through the official Twitter feed that you can see below of them! The property comes from Hiroyuki Etou and ran for about a decade back from 1992 to 2003 where there were sixteen volumes produced. A sequel series landed in 2012 and the seventh volume comes out this month.
The property did have an OVA back in 1994 and it had a TV series in 2000 that ran for almost a year.
Plot concept: Mahoujin Guru Guru is a light-hearted series aimed at older children; it contains occasional toilet gags and some innuendo that might startle western parents. It also is a parody of early role-playing video games (RPGs), particularly turn-based games such as the Dragon Quest games. The narrator speaks in place of the dialog in such games, and this is one of the comedy elements of the show. Often role-playing videogame-style information boxes are displayed on screen with accompanying narration in the traditional RPG style. The overall goal of the main characters, Nike and Kukuri, is to defeat Giri, the ruler of the darkness. Since the anime is based on an RPG, several side quests need to be completed before they are able to locate him.
