What They Say
Ever since a cosmic phone call led five literal young goddesses – Belldandy, Urd, Skuld, and, like occasional vowels, Peorth and Lind – to live in college student Keiichi’s residence, his personal life has been turned upside down, sideways, and sometimes even into strange dimensions! It’s back to business when Chihiro and crew return from the retreat – only to find Tamiya and Otaki, left to hold down the store, have turned Whirlwind inside out! But Skuld, the Goddess of the Future, has her own fateful reunion with someone out of her past… remember her old boyfriend, Sentaro?
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Chihiro’s vacation is over all too soon, but she isn’t going to waste any time putting Keiichi back to work. That may not be possible, though, since she left Tamiya and Otaki in charge of her shop while she was gone. Just about anyone could have told her that was a bad idea. The shop is completely trashed with motor parts and garbage scattered over the entire shop. There isn’t even any stock resting on any of the shelves.
Normally, I would think that Belldandy wanting to help the guys clean is strange and out of place, but she is a goddess. Chihiro forbids Belldandy to help, but what Chihiro doesn’t know can’t hurt her. Belldandy casts a spell to speed up Tamiya and Otaki, who amazingly meet the five-minute deadline set by Chihiro. That certainly doesn’t mean everything is okay. A client shows up asking to have his bike changed back to normal after Tamiya and Otaki beefed up his ride without asking. Chihiro won’t stand for anything that makes her customers unhappy, so she forces the guys to run around town fixing all the bikes they tweaked while she was gone.
While that storyline has its funny moments, it doesn’t have any emotional kick. Luckily, this volume finishes up with the reappearance of Skuld’s old boyfriend, Sentaro. It doesn’t take long for the two to revert to their old friendship, hanging out and riding their bikes around town. This story is pretty cute as Skuld breaks her tomboy persona whenever Sentaro is around, and even flips out when he shows up unannounced to find her scruffy looking from working in her shop.
In Summary
It sure seems like these later volumes have been short and sweet. The early books in this series were noticeably longer and didn’t seem to focus so much on the mechanical engineering aspect seen in the recent volumes. Then again, Keiichi is working for Chihiro now, so his life revolves around being a mechanic much more than when he first met Belldandy. At this point, I think I’m ready for a new goddess to show up and wreak havoc on Keiichi’s life.
