One of the crazier rights paths we’ve seen, and that’s saying something considering how the anime world can work sometimes, is that of the Terminator franchise. With the copyright reversion happening in 2019, thirty-five years after the original film came out in 1984, to James Cameron, it looks like he’s going to be involved in overseeing what comes next. And it looks like one aspect of what might happen is that talks are including bringing in Deadpool director Tim Miller to helm the project.
With the 2015 film Terminator: Genisys not doing what it needed to, it looks like Skydance is looking to work with Cameron on all of this after the David Ellison purchased the rights back in 2013. That film did $440 million worldwide on a $155 million budget so it ended up scrapping future plans. But one can see how Paramount and Skydance would want to get something moving if they can get Cameron’s involvement more as well as simply having him out there as a strong ambassador to bring fans onto it.
That said, the whole thing really does feel like it needs a full on reboot after we’ve had:
