As far as manga goes, I don’t tend to buy a lot of new titles because I usually stick to the ones I’m already buying unless there’s something I really, really want. I would say I am a Hero because it’s such a cool story with interesting characters, and the omnibus makes it easy to collect as well as having great quality. There’s a lot of great manga being released, but I can’t really comment since I haven’t been able to read them yet. Now, if someone would license Billy Bat, please.

If light novels count, nothing can even compare to the Spice and Wolf Anniversary Collector’s Edition, but otherwise I guess I would have to give it to Goodnight Punpun. Viz released just over half of the long-awaited masterpiece in big omnibuses with the high quality expected from their Sig line, a deserved treatment for the most brilliantly unpleasant and surreal depiction of the horrors of adolescence and life in general.

That Spice and Wolf release did look absolutely beautiful.

As for manga, I’ll agree with Kestrel and say Goodnight Punpun was a long-awaited release that didn’t disappoint. As per the usual with Viz, its Signature release was nice and sturdy with bigger-than-average pages plus a nice matted (is that the word?) cover. Having them released omnibus-style was probably done since they anticipated it would be a niche title that wouldn’t sell as well in individual volumes, but that’s fine with me, considering the releases themselves are top-notch.

As a slight aside, I’ve noticed that later releases of Punpun have been wrapped in plastic, but volume 1 continues to not be in every bookstore I’ve seen it in. Kinda odd considering the nature of the series, even 1 volume in, though I guess that’s good for curious newbies to check out before committing to the weirdness that is an Asano Inio manga.

I suppose the first volume, taking place more in Punpun’s childhood, is slightly less explicit than subsequent volumes, but of course not entirely safe by any means.

The lack of volume 1 in libraries I’ve been to is why I still haven’t read Punpun. I could order it online but then I see my shelves of incomplete manga and buy some other volume instead. I’ll get to it eventually, though.

Main reason I don’t collect manga right there, expensive and holy shit the space it takes up.

Queen Emeraldas: Thanks to Kodansha Comics for putting out this nice hardbound edition of the one female character I’ve often thought doesn’t get enough love. I’ve often wanted to see Emeraldas get more adventures besides the OAV series that only got a partial release in the U.S. Hoping for more to come.
