GKIDS Begins ‘Ocean Waves’ Theatrical Anime Rollout

2 min read

Ocean WavesGKIDS continues to work some strong magic when it comes to the variety of animation projects they’ve been bringing out beyond just the Studio Ghibli works. But the Studio Ghibli works attracts its own kind of attention and one that will definitely do that is the rarely seen overseas release of Ocean Waves. The distributor is bringing out the film for a limited event on December 28th, 2016 in New York City and LA and we’re hoping for an attempted one-night release elsewhere later on. The plan at the moment, however, is to take the new 4k restoration and bring it out on home video in spring 2017. Check out the new GKIDS trailer below and the longer Australian trailer from a previous Madman release to see more of it.

Plot Concept: Rarely seen outside of Japan, OCEAN WAVES is a subtle, poignant and wonderfully detailed story of adolescence and teenage isolation. Taku and his best friend Yutaka are headed back to school for what looks like another uneventful year. But they soon find their friendship tested by the arrival of Rikako, a beautiful new transfer student from Tokyo whose attitude vacillates wildly from flirty and flippant to melancholic. When Taku joins Rikako on a trip to Tokyo, the school erupts with rumors, and the three friends are forced to come to terms with their changing relationships.
