What They Say
The school trip to Okinawa is turning out to be the opposite of a good time for Nanami and her friends. A terrible storm has shut down the island, and it turns out the bad weather is being caused by an enraged mermaid who won’t rest until her stolen robe of feathers is returned. Nanami tries to get the robe back from Kirihito, who takes it to help him rescue his body from the Land of the Dead, but ends up drained of her vital energy! Can her shinshi Tomoe and Mizuki put aside their difference long enough to save their kamisama, or is Okinawa doomed?!
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Tomoe has come to Nanami’s rescue with the aid of one of Unari’s followers, and they are able to restore the life force that Kirihito stole. In the meantime, Mizuki and a reluctant Karma try to find the kidnapped Ami.
Karma is the first to approach Unari and does a poor job of convincing her to let Ami go. It’s Mizuki that makes the difference with Unari and gets Ami freed by agreeing to be Unari’s husband. Karma leaves Mizuki in search of Ami and frantically looks for her. It takes awhile, but when he does find, he rescues a thankful Ami and is told something he’s always wanted to hear…that she likes him just as he is (as a tengu).
While Tomoe would be content letting Mizuki stay at the bottom of the ocean with Unari, Nanami will not allow it. They both go find Mizuki and Unari lets him go back to the surface. Mizuki promises he will return each year on that date to see her. Mizuki does return happily to the surface with Nanami, he remains a bit melancholy about leaving Unari.
With the typhoon now gone, the school trip can resume. Tomoe takes this opportunity to care for Nanami and remind her just how much he loves her.
In Summary
The charm in this volume is all about Karma and Mizuki. Karma’s averseness to help humans is nothing more than an act. He doesn’t hate them and it’s pointed out to him directly. He is coerced into helping Mizuki find Ami, but it’s really not as much of a chore as he paints it to be. I really enjoy when a character finds someone to believe in them. In this case, it softens Karma.
Mizuki also shows his soft side when dealing with Unari. His kind and honest nature comes forth, making his character more loveable than it already it is. To Unari he becomes the person that believes in her, the opposite of Karma’s situation.
I often find that I enjoy the supporting characters and their relationships more than the main ones. If you’re the same way, then you’ll also enjoy this volume.
