‘Doctor Strange’ Has Strong Worldwide Debut

2 min read

doctor-stange-visual-4All eyes were on the latest Marvel Studios film this weekend with Doctor Strange to see what would happen with one of the lesser known characters yet one that has his own cult following over the years. The film had a strong weekend overall with a $85 million domestic opening while doing $325 million worldwide overall. It had a great weekend in China with $44 million, which is puts it in third place compared to other Marvel Films there with Avengers: Age of Utron and Captain America: Civil War in first and second respectively. It did $12.2 million in IMAXand was the first film to play in over a thousand IMAX screens worldwide in a single weekend, and it helped to push Disney Studios past the $6 billion mark globally for the first time.

Suffice to say, we’ll see a sequel.

Elsewhere on the chart, the debut of Trolls domestically did quite well with a $45 million debut and we can see a sequel being pushed quick for that one. And, coming in as expected, Hacksaw Ridge landed with a $15 million take, which is pretty good considering the type of film, some of the stigma still attached to Mel Gibson, and the fact he hasn’t directed anything since Apocaltypto.

Next weekend sees a few new arrivals with Almost Christmashitting 2,200 screens and The Arrival in 2,200 screens as well, which feels a bit low. There’s also Shut In, a new thriller from EuropaCorp, that’s set to land on about 1,800 screens.
