What They Say:
Kae Serinuma is what you’d call a “fujoshi.” When she sees boys getting along with each other, she loves to indulge in wild fantasies! One day her favorite anime character dies and the shock causes her to lose a ton of weight. Then four hot guys at school ask her out, but that isn’t exciting to her at all — she’d rather see them date each other!
The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
In the first half this episode, the soccer team recruits Serinuma. She might be slimmer than ever, but she still sucks at soccer. But, Serinuma isn’t about to give up even though she is what she calls an “indoor person”.
At first Nana thinks the charm she gave him and her attempt at playing soccer is completely stupid. The rest of the boys encourage her to do the best she can and even offer to give her advice. Nana and Serinuma end up in a fight over this, but it’s short lived when he sees how hard she is working. He lets go of his anger and helps her out.
Serinuma’s soccer days are short lived, and in the second half of the episode focuses on summer break. Serinuma dreams of spending it happily as a fujoshi, but her poor test grades make studying a priority. A study session at Serinuma’s forces her to clean her room filled of BL. Serinuma’s brother barges in to make sure the boys know she is a fujoshi. The boys back her up and she successfully passes her test.
In Summary:
I was very happy that they focused a lot on the boys’ reactions to the fact that Serinuma is an otaku and fujoshi. We all hope that people are going to accept all of our quirks, whatever they may be, but reality tells us that people will judge and sometimes exceptionally harsh.
Nana’s a great representation why people hide that they are a fujoshi/fudanshi, or even an otaku for that matter. Nana doesn’t get it, and he has no qualms letting everyone know about it. This causes a rift in the group as a whole. Nana doesn’t exactly understand Serinuma’s love for BL, but does come to accept her as she is.
The only thing that continues to bother me a little is that the most of the boys only like her for her outward appearance. I know it’s an anime, so that’s why I overlook it and just enjoy the show for the good laughs…and you should too!
