Toei Animation previously released the Steel Jeeg series on DVD back in 2004 but they’re bringing it back into print next year at long last. Rather than do a box set, they’re going to release what came out before with the five DVDs with a lower price overall. All five volumes are scheduled to land on January 11th, 2017 priced at 6,480 yen each for the first four volumes while the fifth with fewer episode will be priced at 3,240 yen.
The forty-six episode anime series is based on the manga by Go Nagai and Akira Oze and it aired in 1975 alongside the manga. Animated by Dynamic Planning, it was directed by Masayuki Akihi with character designs by Kazuo Nakamura. The main cast includes Tohru Furuya as Hiroshi Shiba and Rihoko Yoshida as Miwa Uzuki.
Plot concept: Hiroshi Shiba is an outstanding car racer whose father is assassinated upon the discovery of the Bronze Bell from an ancient civilization. This Bronze Bell is coveted by Queen Himika who comes from that ancient era; the Yamatai Kingdom, and whose ambitions are to seize the Bell and dominate earth.
Hiroshi is left with a few items from his father which would enable him to morph into a full sized mecha warrior, the Steel Jeeg. With these abilities and the help of his father’s brain implanted in a computer and his assistance Miwa “Micchi” Uzuki, they set out to neutralize Himika’s plans of world dominion.
