Sigourney Weaver Boards ‘Defenders’ Event Series

2 min read

The Defenders LogoA lot of the attention this weekend at NYCC with regards to Marvel and Netflix was on the upcoming Iron Fist series as well as a good bit with Luke Cage since that just debuted while also touching on the other two series. With things getting ready to focus more on Iron Fist as we get into next year with its March 17th, 2017 debut date, Marvel surprised by talking just a little bit about The Defenders. With the show getting ready to move into production more, it’s been revealed that Sigourney Weaver is joining the project to serve as the villain for it. The villain wasn’t named but there’s a lot of specuatlion that she may be playing a variant on Viper, a potential cross-ownership character that Fox used in The Wolverine.

Planned as a five episode event series, we recently learned that the showrunners for Daredevil were going to be handling this property, which pretty much means any third season of Daredevil won’t hit until fall 2017 based on the cycle, if not later depending on how Jessica Jones goes.

While we know the title characters in each of the four series are set to appear in The Defenders, Eka Darville of Jessica Jones revealed at the Supanova Pop Culture Expo back in April that he’ll be participating in some form as well. Darville’s character of Malcolm Ducasse is pretty much believed to be a form of Malcolm Powder in the comics, who was a regular in the Alias series that the Jessica Jones series comes from. He doesn’t have any powers so it’s likely just a smaller supporting role to keep things interconnected with the event.

The event series will star Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Finn Jones and Eka Darville. Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are on board as the showrunners.
