Amanchu! takes the spot for slice-of-life of the season. The show isn’t likely to wow anyone with its animation, which is solid but nothing spectacular and often punctuated with super-deformed muppety moments which with either endear you or madden you. The music is lovely at setting the mood perfectly, but it’s understated. The heart is in its story. A story of one transplant’s journey to find herself by finding something that she can truly enjoy, and of finding new people to enjoy it with. The diving is very much a part of that, but it’s not the focus of the show. That doesn’t mean that the diving there is isn’t informative, and it’s taken extremely seriously. A good friend is hard to find, and it’s hard to say if Futaba and Hikari are supposed to be anything more than besties. (Despite the hand holding- this is not a sexual romance on display here, at least not in shoujo terms… not yet anyway.) In a year which has been trying for so many, we need more shows like this. Its heart is in the right place, and it’s a good place.
