The path for the sequel to Pacific Rim continues to move right along with some new casting and information on the project as the start of production begins for the film that Universal Pictures set a February 23rd, 2018 release date for. The latest addition to the cast is that of Levi Meaden who is joining as “an irreverent and offbeat cadet” in the film. Meaden’s currently in the SyFy series Aftermath as his main credit while also having roles in The Killing and The 100 and a few other CW shows..

It was revealed earlier this week that the project will begin filming in November in Australia but that there will be filming taking place in China. The film did a significant amount of its box office there and broke some records at the time and this project is seen largely as aimed at that market, particularly with a good bit of its funding coming there. So bringing in more talent from there is a given as it shooting there.

Directed by Stephen S. De Knight, the film starts John Boyega, Cailee Spaeny, Jiang Tian and Scott Eastwood. None of the cast from the original film have been confirmed to return and Charlie Hunnam saying specifically that he would be sitting this one out.

Original film concept: When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
