Toei is back with another DVD re-release with the 1963 film Wan Wan Chuushingura, also known as Doggie March, which is based on the original story from Osamu Tezuka. The DVD is getting essentially a repressing of the 2002 release they put out years ago as it’s scheduled for a November 9th, 2016 debut priced at 2,800 yen.
The film was originally released in 1963 and was directed by Daisaku Shirakawa and Kei Iijima with Toei Animation handling the production. The Japanese cast includes Chiyoko Honma as Karo, Fumitake Omura as Nukita, Hideo Kinoshita as Rock and Hideo Sato as Goro.
Plot concept: The homeless dog Rock swears to take to revenge on a tiger named Killer in the zoo, who had killed his mother. The dogs in town, troubled by the atrocities of Killer, join forces to support Rock. Changing the target of revenge to the murderer of the main character’s mother made it easier for kids to empathize with the character.
