With a lackluster performance for the 2015 theatrical film from Paramount, the studio began discussions with Amazon Studios in September 2015 about bringing the Jack Ryan property there to the world of TV. That solidified in April 2016 with the project getting a series committment if they could get things off the ground right, which it now seems like it has. The project makes sense from a purely marketing/cross platform perspective considering that Amazon sells a slew of Tom Clancy novels and works through their site, so being able to manage both of them together will likely lead to some sales increase.
Amazon has now formally given the project a straight-to-series order of ten episodes with John Krasinski taking on the titular role of Jack Ryan. No other casting has been revealed at the moment.
The series, which is looking to work original stories as opposed to adaptations of the novels, will have Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland handling it in conjunction with Platinum Dunes, Skydance Media and Paramount TV.
Plot concept: A reinvention with a modern sensibility, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan follows Ryan (Krasinski), an up-and-coming CIA analyst as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the center of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.
