With a couple of Tokiko’s Room pieces so far and some hot spring material for the guys, this episode shifts us to the characters of A and Un when they first met on Bamboo Island. Having not seen the main series I don’t have any context for their present day relationship, but it’s fun watching them in this very traditional old style design and setting where it has all the mood and atmosphere with the animation and color design to sell it well enough as something moody. The two don’t have a meet-cute or anything but we get a rescue by the end that helps to show why they’re bound to each other at this stage in a simple but cute way without making it something far more than it needs to be.
In Summary:
The Short!! series continues right along here and this one goes for something moody as opposed to silly and comical, though it has its cute moments. A and Un come across well here for what we get, though it’s not exactly easy for new viewers as the characters aren’t even named within the episode. But I like the visual design of it all and it leaves me curious as to how they play within the bigger structure of the main series with the music and their approach so the show is certainly managing to hit all the right notes for enticing me into it some day.
