While Lionsgate had hopes for The Divergent Series being a solid companion to the success of The Hunger Games, lightning in a bottle was not going to happen twice for a range of reasons. With the third film underperforming this year and the fourth and final installment, which is half of the third and final book, being planned for a June 9th, 2017 bow but not entering production year, it’s apparently being looked at as shifting to a different distribution model, at least domestically. Lionsgate is looking at the option of pushing it straight to TV plus likely premium streaming services and on-demand angles, particularly since they just completed their purchase of the Starz network of channels. With rapidly declining revenues on it and features that tend to cost more as time goes on, it may be the smartest move to bring things to a close in a reasonable way.

The first three films so far:

  • Divergent – $151M domestically and $288.9M worldwide
  • Insurgent – $130.1M domestically and $273.2M worldwide
  • Allegiant – $66.2M domestically and $179.2M worldwide

Plot concept: One choice will define you. What if your whole world was a lie? What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything? What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected? Told from a riveting dual perspective, this final installment in the series follows Tris and Tobias as they battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and their selves—while facing impossible choices of courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.
