After a first season that did well back in spring 2015 with merchandise and music sales and a second season due out this fall, Show by Rock looks to reconnect with fans ahead of time with a new short-form series. Having not seen the original series, I’m going into this a little blind but curious about it and its three minute running time. The opening episode basically puts us in the talk show circuit where the girls of Plasmagica are visiting with Tokiko – complete with in-show themed commercials amid it. The episode provides for introductions – something some shows don’t do – with what instruments they play so you get a decent feel for them and their personalities quickly and easily. It’s certainly not deep but it sets things up pretty well with some cuteness.
In Summary:
Show by Rock Short delivers pretty well here with what it needs to by giving us an episode of introductions and setting the foundations for it. You can watch this without seeing the original and enjoy it in its simplicity and potential weirdness. There’s an odd bit of fanservice mixed in with the whole girls having tails things, especially having them all lining up facing away from Tokiko, and I can see that being a little off-putting for some but entertaining for others. Mix all of this together with some pretty well detailed backgrounds and colorful character designs that click and I’m finding myself more curious about the original series already.
