Well, that was an odd weekend. And not just because I saw The Lobster and had a lot of fun unpacking the meaning and themes behind that very strange little film from A24 that did 1.5 million this weekend as it added a couple hundred theaters, bringing it to $4 million.
TMNT: Out of the Shadows fell short of the original by about $30 million as this one landed with a $35 million opening weekend to secure first place. With a $135 million budget, it’s the overseas side that will attempt to salvage it and pin hopes on for more.
Also on the new front was Me Before You, which came in with a $18.2 million debut that was heavily loaded for female audiences that made up 81% of who went to see it. With a $20 million budget, the film will definitely do well even if not well-received critically.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping wasn’t destined for greatness as the Andy Samberg piece arrived with just $4.6 million, which we don’t expect to grow too much more from there.
In its second weekend, X-Men: Apocalypse is not going to fare well based on the mixed word of mouth as the film dropped a whopping 66% from its low debut compared to Days of Future Past and brought in just $22 million. With word that Singer is stepping away from X-Men for a bit, hopefully we’ll just see other characters and teams taking the center stage for a while. It’s doing better overseas where it had a $286 million run so far, with China bringing in $59 million this weekend for $286 million foreign.
Alice Through the Looking Glass also dipped again, down 60%, bringing in just $10.6 million for a $50 million total.
On the older side, Zootopia is still ekeing out business and it climbed past the $1 billion mark this weekend, the fourth animated film to do so.
