A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL DOCTOR

Kokonoé’s plan comes to fruition, allowing him and Ohmori to evade execution while also creating a diversion for Sengoku and his friends to escape the clutches of Nishikiori. As they make their way back to the others, Yarai reaches Nishikiori’s camp where he comes to face the cold, hard truth about Kurusu-sensei’s condition. But seeing a chance to turn things in his favor, Nishikiori makes a deal with Yarai. Will Yarai go through with Nishikiori’s dastardly request for the chance to save the life of his teacher?

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
This volume starts off with a BANG, literally. The crazy Nishikiori has Sengoku’s gang tied up and plans to put them all to death, starting with Ohmori and Kokonoe. Nishikiori is burning them at the stake, but Kokonoe left a way out. He planted a bomb under the bonfire which explodes from the flames and creates a smoke cloud large enough to create complete anarchy. Not only does this allow Sengoku’s gang to sneak off during the chaos, but the explosion also cuts open Nishikiori’s cheek.

While a cut like that will scar his looks forever, it isn’t a life-threatening injury. Well, at least it wouldn’t be in society. But with life on their tropic island, there are no antibiotics or soap. Thus, there is a very real chance of infection and death from even something as small as getting a splinter. Since Nishikiori is a med student, he becomes obsessed with his cut and keeping it clean. This only makes his unstable personality begin to unravel even more, and it is going to be interesting to see where the author takes it. Will Nishikiori keep it clean and be okay or will it become infected and slowly kill him?

It was a close call, but Sengoku’s group was able to escape and return to the Antenna and rejoin Mariya’s group. While the group that stayed behind at the Antenna wasn’t in as much danger as Sengoku’s group, they did spend their time learning amazing things about the Antenna. They not only uncovered information about who built the monument, but also where the island is located! But not to be outdone, Sengoku’s group learned that the island has an underground DNA lab!

But what does it all mean and why has it been made? Why bioengineer copies of dead plants and animals? Who set it all up? What about Nishikiori’s plan to use Yarai as a pawn to kill Sengoku? What could be so precious to Yarai to make him even consider Nishikiori’s demands?

In Summary
There was a big revelation in the last volume with discovery of the underground research lab related to the island’s living plants and animals that have been extinct for eons. This volume ups the ante by revealing more information about who owns the island and the true location of the island in the ocean. There is even hope for a possible way to get home. However, there are also some moments that will force characters to reflect on themselves and the choices they are about to make. In particular, much of that inner turmoil for this volume evolves around Yarai and the two women closest to him. It becomes an odd love triangle that will likely have tragic events for those involved and some of the innocent bystanders around them. Much to look forward to as this series closes in on the final stretch.
