Progress continues on the relaunch of The Mummy, which was expected with Tom Cruise joining the project and pushing it forward. The latest according to The Hollywood Reporter is that Jake Johns of New Girl has joined the project as a member of the military “in a role written specifically for him.” Johnson joins Cruise along with Sofia Boutella as the Mummy and Annabell Wallis as an archaeologist in the film.

The relaunch plans for The Mummy received a significant move back in April 2015 as it was planned for June 2016 and was bumped back to June 9th, 2017. This is the first follow-up to the Dracula Untold film as part of the larger connected “monster universe” that they’re trying to put together. Because of the previous shift, the third film in the project, which is still untitled, was moved to March 30th, 2018.

The Mummy is set to be directed by Alex Kurtzman based on the script by Jon Spaihts.
