New Films Fade Fast While Third ‘Kung Fu Panda’ Tops Box Office

3 min read

Hail CaesarThere wasn’t a lot of enthusiasm going into the weekend for the new films that were on tap overall and two of them fell pretty hard. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies couldn’t get past the joke aspect of it to be entertained in theaters and it pulled a measly $5.2 million on its $28 million budget. Perhaps it’ll do better overseas? Similarly, the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation with The Choice did just a bit better at $6 million for the weekend, but certainly far below what you usually get going into the Valentine’s Day period. While no budget is associated with it, it’s still not a great release for Lionsgate. The other new film this weekend was Hail, Caesar, which is the only one of the three I didn’t make it out to see, and it did $11.4 million on its $22 million budget to come in second place.

At the top is Kung Fu Panda 3, which with no younger fare out there isn’t a surprise, as it did another $21 million to bring it to $69 million in its second weekend. With a 95 minute running time and 3D option out there as well, it’s able to get a number of showings for folks looking to do something with kids in the middle of winter.

Last week’s release of Jane Got A Gun has dropped 85% in its second week by taking in $127,000. That brings it to $1.3 million so far, a fantastic flop among flops and that adds to the slate of flops for Weinstein. It looks like their release of Regression is doing poorly as well with its 100 theater opening as it pulled in $31,000, or $310 per screen. Yikes.

Also out last week was The Fienst Hours, which dropped 54% this weekend for a meager $4.7 million total, bringing it to $18 million. I haven’t seen it yet – I can’t do movies like this in the theater as I get weak kneed – but I had hoped for better considering how well done it looked.

On the Star Wars: The Force Awakens front, the film has reached $906 million domestic and $1.1 billion international for a $2.008 billion take so far. It’s the third film to cross the $2b mark after Avatar and Titanic. Yay!

Next weekend will definitely be interesting to see as Deadpool has a lot at stake with its R-Rated superhero comedy/action film. We’ve got one new Valentine’s themed film with How to be Single, and Zoolander 2 arrives as well. Much like the first, I expect it will have a long aftermarket life.
