Lawrence Kasdan Talks ‘Han Solo’ Feature Film

2 min read

Han SoloConsidering the amount of material out there as The Force Awakens hit, it’s no surprise that some things were a little under the radar. One of those, for me at least, was hearing a bit from Lawrence Kasdan about the plans for the Han Solo film that’s part of the standalone phase of things. Set for a May 28th, 2018 release with Pihl Lord and Christopher Miller directing, Kasdan talked about the rough time period for it and some of the general conceptual ideas for the character, which in turn carries through to The Force Awakens

“[The film] will not be, “Here’s where he was born and this is how he was raised.” I think what it will be is what was he like 10 years earlier [than A New Hope]—maybe a little earlier, you’ll get a glimpse. But Kurosawa once said the heroes are the ones that are still changing and the villains are locked and petrified into what they are, and Harrison embodies in Force Awakens someone who is still not settled on who he is.”

“He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s,” Producer Kathleen Kennedy said back in August. “We’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo.”

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” the helmer duo said in a statement back in July. “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

Plot concept: The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.
